Once upon a time public lectures were held in this stately mansion, situated in a quiet Petroverigsky pereulok. Dostoevsky, Ostrovsky, Pleshcheyev spoke at “literary mornings” and sophisticated wealthy connoisseurs of art enjoyed the exposition of the art gallery, collected by one of the richest entrepreneurs and patrons of Russia Vasily Kokorev. Aivazovsky, Bryullov, Borovikovsky, Levitsky, Venetsianov, Vay Dyck, Breughel....

As time passes, the halls with high ceilings and marble columns saw other faces, they were young and romantic. The building was occupied by the male inmates of the Lutheran school of Peter and Paul, among them were the famous experimental physicist Pyotr Lebedev, the dramatic actor Maxim Shtrauch, and the future Soviet diplomat Vaclav Vorovsky.

However, in Soviet times, these walls have heard the famous names. 30 June 1944 higher medical scientific organization – Academy of medical Sciences of the USSR is created under the people's Commissariat of health of the USSR. A year later, the Institute of Experimental and Clinical Therapy, which Director was the famous physician academician V. F. Zelenin, began its work as a part of the USSR AMS. He was the first Russian Clinician to use electrocardiography to study the heart.

Nevertheless, the Institute began conducting more extensive research in the field of cardiovascular pathology with the arrival of a new Director - academician of the USSR AMS A. L. Myasnikov in 1948. The main areas of work were the researchers of atherosclerosis and hypertension. The scale of the Institute's work required new space, and again the life of old mansion in Petroverigsky pereulok was in full swing – this time scientific life. These walls are again connected with the names of talented and creative people – doctors and scientists.

Coronary circulation and its regulation, the association of hypertension and renal and cerebral circulation, contractile function of the heart, coronary artery disease, stress and regulation of blood pressure, cellular electrophysiology of the heart, arrhythmia – all this got into the field of vision of doctors and researchers of the Institute, making it a unique specialized medical institution, where closely engaged in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

In 1960 – 1970 researches on atherosclerosis were significantly expanded, intensive researches about the problem of "myocardial Infarction" were developed.  It was for the first time in the country and one of the first in the world in 1963, when specialized Department for treatment of patients with acute myocardial infarction with intensive care unit (Yu.I. Chazov and employees) was created. 16 may 1973 the first clinical echocardiographic examination was conducted by the staff of the Institute under the leadership of Yu. N. Belenkov and O. Yu. Atkov. On 5 June 1975 for the first time in the world at the Department of emergency cardiology, the patient with myocardial infarction was conducted thrombolysis with intracoronary the introduction of fibrinolysin at a dose 10 times less than under intravenous drug administration. This event has become one of the world's recognized major achievements of the Institute.

Today National Medical Research Center for Preventive Medicine celebrates its 30th anniversary, acting as a worthy heir to the experience and scientific traditions of the Institute of Experimental and Clinical Therapy, the Institute of Cardiology named after Myasnikov, Institute of Preventive Cardiology. Its names were changed, but his history, interest in scientific research and the desire to introduce fundamental scientific results into routine medical practice were carefully preserved.

Alexander Myasnikov, Igor Shkhvatsabaya, Yuri Belenkov, Evgeny Chazov, Rafael Oganov, Sergey Boitsov, Oksana Drapkina…

…behind them is leadership of a talented team of a unique medical institution, and a huge contribution to the development of cardiology as a branch of medicine, as a science and as an art. The most important art is to preserve the life and health of people.
